Mandible was reconstructed with a free fistula taken from the lower limb. Fistula is a small bone below the knee that supports the tibia and has its blood supply.
It is harvested along with its blood supply and mandible is reconstructed. A tooth can be implanted over it after 6 or 12 months depending on radiotherapy.
The tongue is the second most common after Buccal Mucosa. Only removing half of the tongue without plastic reconstruction will lead to speech impairment.
